I'd need to call to check, but I'm lazy.

The US government knows already about all the trades you've made on US exchanges, and all the US dividends you got. All of that is reported to them. And they received electronic copies of these tax forms. You will see in your accounts that US tax has already been withheld on dividends, by the company in the US that manages that. If your broker identified you as a non US citizen, the tax is lower (15% vs 30%)

Normally we tell the US government we're not US resident by filing the W8Ben with our Canadian broker
https://www.freshbooks.com/blog/w-8ben-form-canada-tax

if too much US taxes were withdrawn from you, you can use the forms they send you to claim it back from the US. For us Canadian, the tax package is not about reporting to the US or paying taxes to US. We've already paid the tax automatically. It caught me off guard, I had already sent all my papers in to my accountant to file taxes. Usually this kind of thing comes through TD (my online broker). It had been in my RRSP, I had already sold it last year, hardly remembered owning it. The letter that came with it seemed vague, so like you, I decided it didn't apply to me. You make a good point, was sent regular mail, can always claim it never arrived,

Im glad you mention it, this is something new to me. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
