I just received my 2025 Year in Review from ChatGPT, and it even generated some extra cute visuals! I especially love the “TFSA Queen” mug ☕👑. Can you believe that the following poem was actually addressed to me by ChatGPT?

This is quite charming, especially knowing that 2025 is the year I reached the $500,000 net worth milestone. The content feels so appropriate. The fact that it’s coming from a machine is honestly a bit shocking! It even respects poetry rules and rhythm.

I use ChatGPT on a regular basis. I’ve never had trouble coming up with ideas for my blog, but I often ask ChatGPT to proofread and polish my articles. It has truly become my proofreader buddy.

The TSX closed today’s session just below the fabulous 32,000 points, at 31,866.26, down 0.10%. Despite the slight pullback, my investments still gained a few hundred dollars. I closed today’s session with a net worth of $526,920.21. I could have made it into the $527K range if it weren’t for my rent payment—I always pay my rent a few days before the due date.

Tomorrow marks the last trading day of 2025. To close the year at $530,000 in net worth, I would need a gain of $3,080 by the end of the day. That’s quite a jump for a single session, but maybe I’ll be able to finish close to that level. I should also be able to make a final RRSP contribution, bringing my 2025 RRSP contributions to $5,000.

I made a few new investments today. I added Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund ETF Shares (VXUS) to my U.S. portfolio. In my RRSP portfolio, I invested in iShares NASDAQ 100 Index ETF (CAD-Hedged) (XQQ), Vanguard Global Momentum Factor ETF (VMO), and Vanguard S&P 500 Index ETF (VFV). These ETFs increase my exposure to the U.S. market and improve diversification.

Tomorrow is the last trading day of 2025. We’ll see how it goes.

End-of-Year Investing Notes and a New Investment Idea From Sprott: Sprott Physical Copper Trust (COP.UN)

Back on December 2, I invested in a few stocks inside my RRSP portfolio. I forgot to add those new investments to my portfolio update, but I’ll include them next time. The investments I made that day quickly registered some great gains:

  • Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP.U): +18.27%

  • Thor Explorations Ltd. (THX): +7.87%

  • Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX): +6.51%

  • Linamar Corporation (LNR): +6.42%

  • Royal Canadian Mint – Canadian Gold Reserves Exchange-Traded Receipts (MNT): +3.94%

  • Keyera Corp. (KEY): +3.71%

  • Mineros S.A. (MSA): +2.11%

  • United Corporations Limited (UNC): +1.36%

  • Laurentian Bank of Canada (LB): +1.05%

I found most of these new investments on Stockopedia, with the exception of Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX). I already hold another Hamilton ETF in my portfolio: Hamilton Enhanced U.S. Covered Call ETF (HYLD). I was looking for another Hamilton ETF with a high yield, so I decided to go with AMAX.

As for Laurentian Bank of Canada (LB), I decided to buy some shares following the news of its acquisition. Otherwise, you wouldn’t see any LB shares in my portfolio. Laurentian has suffered from years of very poor management, and I’ve never been a fan of the bank. Still, I like investing in individual shares from time to time.

Sprott ETFs are no strangers to my portfolio either. I already hold Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS) units in my RRSP portfolio. PHYS has been in my RRSP for quite some time and has registered a gain of +120%. In just a matter of weeks, Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP.U) gained +18.27%, and I was quite happy with those quick gains.

Another Sprott product that I find interesting, but that doesn’t seem to appear on Stockopedia so far, is: Sprott Physical Copper Trust (COP.UN). COP.UN is fairly recent; it only started trading on the TSX in 2024. Like PHYS and SPPP.U, COP.UN doesn’t pay a dividend distribution, but I still think it’s a nice way to add diversification to a portfolio.

I know I already hold many stocks, across many sectors, but I never shy away from investing in a new find. I’ve made many great discoveries using Stockopedia. Urbana Corporation (URB), Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP.U), Thor Explorations Ltd. (THX), Linamar Corporation (LNR), Royal Canadian Mint – Canadian Gold Reserves Exchange-Traded Receipts (MNT), Keyera Corp. (KEY), Mineros S.A. (MSA), and United Corporations Limited (UNC) were all investment ideas I found while scrolling on Stockopedia.

I started investing in stocks shortly before the 2008 market crash, and when the crash finally happened, I knew it was my chance, I stepped in. I was still worried, of course, but overall I felt confident I was doing the right thing. There are many things you might feel you need to learn while investing, but the number one thing is that capitalism tends to keep moving forward. Despite recessions, market corrections, and wars, no matter what’s going on in the world, money is always at the center of it all. That’s why, if you invest across different stocks, in different sectors, and in high-quality assets, you can survive a lot. And over time, your net worth can grow.

You won’t register gains every single year, but overall, if you have a good 20 to 30 years before you retire, you have time to build a strong investment portfolio that can serve your interests.

It took me a long time. I don’t invest large amounts every year, but never in my life would I have expected to surpass the half-million net worth mark. I truly didn’t expect it to happen. You can start small and, two decades later, end up with more money than you ever imagined, but you need to give yourself a chance. Invest regularly, no matter how small the amounts are. Let your investments stay in your portfolio. Set up a DRIP whenever possible. And watch your assets grow over time.

This past year, I really felt the weight of my biggest holdings. In my non-registered portfolio, my largest holding happens to be Pembina Pipeline Corporation (PPL). And it hasn’t made things very easy for me, because from time to time, I really feel it whenever PPL pulls back, even if it’s a small pullback. It can slow down my progress. PPL has a very big impact on the value of my non-registered portfolio.

I don’t feel the need to sell PPL, but that said, I do feel the need for diversification. I feel the need to invest more and increase my dividend income. Right now, my obsession is to reach the equivalent of $1,000 in dividend income from my TFSA and non-registered portfolios. And I’m really not far away from that goal, so the obsession isn’t going away anytime soon.

Whether it’s my non-registered, TFSA, or RRSP portfolios, I have a few major holdings that my financial health relies on. But beyond that, I don’t see any harm in adding a few new discoveries here and there, especially when they come from Stockopedia. I’m not saying you need to invest in every stock that I invest in, but I personally find it rewarding to watch new additions in my portfolio register strong gains. The idea is simple: you can add a few “extra” positions around your big core holdings—like a spicy touch around the stocks that form the foundation of your net worth. And you can do that by investing as little as one share. The amount doesn’t matter as much as building the habit and staying engaged.

Welcoming a $525,709.19 net worth for Christmas!

My latest paycheque helped push me back into the $525K range, and I have to admit, it felt really good to see that number again. I spent Boxing Day quietly at home. Most stores are closed here in New Brunswick anyway, at least where I am. It’s -20°C outside, and the weather has been brutally cold. The kind of cold that makes you appreciate a warm drink, a cozy blanket, and the simple comfort of staying in with zero pressure to go anywhere.

I’m not too far from $530K, but I think I’ll probably get there sometime in early 2026. Not that $530K is super important, but what happens after that is what fascinates me. After $530K comes $540K, then $550K, and before you know it, $600,000 shows up, almost out of nowhere. That’s the part I love about consistency: when you keep showing up, saving, and investing, the numbers can start building momentum in a way that feels almost unreal.

I don’t get a super generous paycheque every two weeks, but I’m expecting a similarly good one at the beginning of January because of some overtime and because I worked during the holidays. I really don’t mind. It’s nice to have the extra cash, and it’s usually very quiet this time of year. Honestly, there’s something satisfying about using that “extra” money in a smart way, whether it’s boosting savings, making an RRSP contribution, or simply building a little cushion for upcoming expenses.

For 2025, I earned around $68,000 before taxes from my full-time job. I also earned about $7,000 in dividend income from my non-registered portfolio. I’m planning to invest $5,000 in my RRSP, no more than that, because I want to build up some savings before I go back to Montreal. That will be in a couple of months, but I want to save in advance for my summer vacation and other expenses. I’ve learned that it’s much less stressful to plan ahead than to scramble later, even if investing is always tempting when the market is moving.

I asked ChatGPT how much my tax refund might be on a $5,000 RRSP contribution, and I was told it would probably be around $1,800. I have my doubts about that number. I don’t think I’ll get that big of a refund on $5K but we’ll see later on. Either way, I still like the idea of making a contribution because it forces me to stay disciplined and it supports my long-term strategy. Even a smaller refund is still a refund, and it’s one more step forward.

After my rent payment and my RRSP contribution, I’ll be starting 2026 with about $5,600 in savings. By the end of April, I should be close to, or right around, $15,000 in savings if everything goes as planned. From that amount, I’d like to invest a solid $3,000 into my TFSA portfolio. I like having a plan that balances both worlds: enjoying life and staying prepared, while still keeping investing as a priority.

I’d also like to reach the equivalent of $1,000 in monthly dividend income from my non-registered and TFSA portfolios. At $981 right now, I’m not that far from the goal. That last stretch always feels like the longest, but it’s also the most exciting. Because once I cross that line, it’s a major milestone. And from there, the focus becomes maintaining it, growing it, and letting time do what it does best: compound in its best expression.
