Celebrating my highest net worth EVER: $520,005.78

My net worth closed this past Friday’s session at a very nice $520,005.78. This is my highest value ever so far!

It’s quite surprising, especially knowing that tomorrow we’ll already be in December. Lately, I’ve been quite frugal and making an effort to save some money. I didn’t even buy anything during the Black Friday sales. It would have been easy to spend, but I honestly didn’t need anything. I’m really trying to only spend money on things I truly need. Recently, I’ve been cooking vegetarian meals for my old folks, so I’ve been spending a bit more on food. There are three of us, so I have to cook for three instead of just myself. I can’t realistically cook for all of us for a full week, but I’m able to prepare a few meals at least. I do this on the weekend.

This saving mode will continue in the same direction in December.

I am trying to contribute a total of $7,000 to my 2025 RRSP. I already have around $4,000 invested through my job. Whatever I can save until the end of December will go toward my RRSP contribution, and whatever I can save starting in January 2026 will go into my savings.

I had bills to pay this weekend, including my rent for December, so I am now left with only $3,843.84 in savings.

It takes quite a bit of resilience and hard work to build up savings these days, but just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s not doable in this economy where everything is getting so expensive. I am spending the winter months in New Brunswick, in a small town, so it’s actually easier for me to save money here than it would be if I were in Montreal. Winter can be quite long in New Brunswick, but I keep myself busy.

Despite having a net worth in the 500K range, my concerns remain the same as before: save some money, contribute to my RRSP, etc. Nothing is really changing. A 500K net worth is certainly a good amount, but it’s not yet enough to make a significant difference in my life. My investment portfolio doesn’t generate enough in dividends yet to cover all of my expenses. So building up some savings and investing in my RRSP remain on my agenda. It’s nothing I can’t deal with, but not having to actually care about those things would be nice. It just feels like I am at the same point, despite having a 500K net worth.

One reason I feel that way is that I always have to rebuild my savings. It’s something that I find quite annoying. If I could have at least a solid $20,000 in savings, it could have a positive impact on my situation. A year ago, I became debt-free; in 2025, I reached a 500K net worth; and in 2026, I would like to put a little bit more money aside. This won’t bring much excitement, but it’s something that I need to work on. Especially at my age, I am 45 and I have barely 4k in savings, come on!

A new investment idea for my RRSP portfolio: Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX) - Part 2

You know, a good idea is a good idea until it isn’t anymore.

In the previous post, I explained what I planned to do once the shares I hold in Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) no longer trade on the TSX, which will happen sometime in 2026, probably fairly soon. I wanted to have a plan ready for when the money comes in – and we are talking about a good sum of money here, several thousand dollars, actually closer to $10,000 than $5,000. So you can see why I am trying so hard to come up with a very good plan. When I posted my idea for that money, I thought I had a very good plan, but after thinking about it again, I now believe that investing in Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX) might not be the key to all my problems.

AMAX has been trading on the TSX only since 2024, so it doesn’t have a lot of history behind it. AMAX’s overall chart looks very good – but that’s only based on a couple of months, during which gold delivered extremely strong returns. Gold investments are volatile, like any investment. For now, gold is trading near its highs. Such good results cannot last forever. That being said, I do think gold is a good investment for the long term. The only question is whether AMAX is a good investment for the long term and whether its distribution is sustainable over the long run. At 6.782%, AMAX’s yield is high, but it’s not outrageously high. Still, it’s not exactly a conservative dividend either. The fact is, AMAX charmed me because that pick would allow me to exceed $1,000 in monthly dividend income from my TFSA and non-registered portfolios.

When it comes to investing, dividends have always been important, but not as important as the quality of the assets I hold. Dividends came as a little extra. But now, at the equivalent of $971.51 per month, the dividend income coming from my TFSA, non-registered, and, not to forget, my U.S. dollar portfolio is actually going somewhere. And now that the $1,000 mark is so close, wouldn’t it be so much fun to actually be in the 1k?

At this point in my journey, I should know what to do with my money. I am trying very hard, but sometimes, like now, I simply have no idea. I sincerely think that my reaction, and the fact that I cannot decide where to park my money, is actually quite normal and honest. We are living in very particular times. The TSX closed today’s session at a splendid 30,900.65 points, +296.35, +0.97%. The TSX is trading near its highest level ever. We are so close to 31,000 points that it’s just not making any sense at all.

Basically, this post was meant to be just an "oh wait", maybe Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX) is not where I should park several thousand dollars after all… Sorry! Or not.

A new investment idea for my RRSP portfolio: Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX)

This summer, on our way back from a family vacation in Cap-Pelé, we stopped by the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton. We had the perfect day. It wasn’t too hot, and the sun was nowhere to be seen. We wouldn’t have gone to the zoo if it had been a hot, sunny day. Among the lovely animals we saw were Azizi the lion and the female lion Amara, who were definitely the stars of the zoo. Sadly, it was announced today that Azizi has passed away. He was 18 years old and spent most of his life at Moncton’s Magnetic Hill Zoo.

These are the pictures I took of Azizi and Amara during my visit. They were pretty much asleep the whole time. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to keep animals in captivity in cages just for our entertainment. I still enjoyed my visit to the Magnetic Hill Zoo, though. I hadn’t visited a zoo in a very long time.

Following the sale of my Telus Corp (T) shares inside my RRSP portfolio, I was left with a couple of thousand dollars in cash, patiently waiting to be invested somewhere else. I actually have a few ideas, but for one reason or another, it’s difficult to come up with investment ideas for my RRSP, especially knowing that soon enough I’ll have a few thousand more to invest by the end of the year. It’s not a process that I enjoy, as I almost find it a waste of money since RRSP funds can only be touched much later in life. So I don’t know yet what I’ll be investing in for my RRSP, but I did come up with a great idea for my TFSA portfolio for when Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) will no longer be trading on the TSX and I’m left with several thousand dollars just waiting to be invested.

So here’s the plan I’ve been working on, focusing a bit too much on the dividend income, making it almost feel like it’s my top priority. Currently, my monthly dividend income is a little bit down, at $971. What I like about my plan is that I’ll be able to exceed the equivalent of $1,000 in dividend income per month. I’ve been dancing around the $1,000 mark for a little while now without actually being there.

It hasn’t been easy to come up with this idea, but basically, I started by looking for options among what I already hold in my portfolio. I’m already pretty packed with PPL and ENB. The energy sector has great dividend payers. I just had no idea where to park my money. Then I looked at my Hamilton Enhanced U.S. Covered Call ETF (HYLD) shares.

When I first invested in HYLD, I was quite skeptical. The price per unit was low, and the ETF was paying a very high distribution. Normally, I wouldn’t have invested in it, but I did because it offered me a bit of exposure to the U.S. market, which wouldn’t hurt in my opinion since most of my assets are concentrated on the good Canadian side. So I finally invested in Hamilton Enhanced U.S. Covered Call ETF (HYLD) in both my RRSP and TFSA portfolios. I’ve been enjoying their monthly distributions, but that’s not all. I’ve also been enjoying some capital gains: +18% in my RRSP portfolio, and +40% for the HYLD shares I hold inside my TFSA portfolio.

For those reasons, I’ve been looking into more Hamilton ETF options. I actually went through each of their funds, and this is how I found the investment that will soon replace my Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) shares inside my TFSA portfolio. That new investment is the Hamilton Gold Producer YIELD MAXIMIZER™ ETF (AMAX). Once GCG disappears from the TSX, I plan to reinvest the money in AMAX. That’s the plan for now. My plan could eventually change. AMAX’s yield is 7.232%, and distributions are paid monthly. I already have exposure to gold with Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS) inside my RRSP, but I can handle a little bit more gold inside my investment portfolio. PHYS doesn’t pay any dividend, so AMAX will add income to that gold exposure.

A Big Thank You and Goodbye to Northland Power Inc. (NPI)

Today, I woke up and decided to sell my shares of Northland Power Inc. (NPI) that I was holding in my TFSA portfolio. I wasn’t holding much NPI anyway. I own so many stocks in my investment portfolio that dumping one or two names I don’t like anymore won’t hurt me, especially if those stocks are poor performers. One reason I went ahead and sold my NPI shares was to free up some easy cash to invest inside my RRSP portfolio. I lost around $100 on my NPI investment, but I’ll get that money back on my tax return—and even more—so I am not mad.

Today, a stock that I hold in my non-registered, TFSA, and RRSP portfolios has been in the spotlight: Telus Corp (T). I couldn’t care less about the opinion of a U.S. firm on my beloved Canadian stocks, but I have to admit that what “the firm,” not to name them, said about Telus resonated with me. Telus could eventually face problems paying its high dividend. Not too long ago, BCE Inc. (BCE) faced the exact same scenario. It seems that the Canadian telecommunication sector is taking a hit, and that’s the case for BCE, Telus, as well as Rogers Communications. One exception to the rule is Quebecor Inc., which appears to be doing better than the others. I hold some Quebecor Inc. (QBR.B) shares inside my RRSP portfolio.

Over the past 52 weeks, Telus’ stock price has ranged from $23.29 to $18.95. Telus closed today’s session at $19 per share. It seems like there’s no room right now for Telus to experience rational growth. Don’t expect Telus to hit $25 per share anytime soon—it’s not going to happen. One major problem Telus shareholders are facing is that if Telus cuts its dividend, the stock could eventually lose value, and that wouldn’t be ideal. For that reason, I decided to sell the Telus shares I was holding inside my RRSP portfolio. Fortunately, in my RRSP, I was still sitting on a small gain with Telus, since it’s a stock I’ve held there for a really long time. In both my TFSA and non-registered portfolio, I am currently facing a small loss on my Telus investment. It’s never fun, but since I am already holding Telus in my TFSA and non-registered portfolios, selling the shares I had in my RRSP for a small gain seemed like the right thing to do.

After Two Great Years, Can 2026 Push My Net Worth to $550,000?

My stock portfolio lost around $1,500 today, a totally normal reaction to the market. The TSX closed today’s session at 30,076.21 points, down 250.25 points or -0.83%. My net worth is probably around $517,000 right now. Still strong. In 2025, it was the first time I reached the 500k mark. Over the past two years, my stock portfolio has gained close to $140,000. I had two excellent years. Can 2026 be just as good and lead me to at least a $550,000 net worth?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the upcoming months turn out to be more difficult. My net worth could go back down into the 400k range. I am getting mentally ready for such a scenario. However, under no circumstances am I wishing for a stock market crash or a heavy correction to arrive anytime soon. Yes, stocks would become cheaper, but it would break my heart to see my valuable net worth fall back below the 500k mark. I have experienced some difficult years. For example, in 2022, I started the year with a net worth of $340,128.37 and closed it on a lower note at $337,875.65. Similar scenarios could happen again and, when they do, trust me, it’s no fun.

Time is passing by quite quickly. In less than two months from now, we’ll be celebrating the New Year. Not that I am ready to jump into a new year, but I am never really ready anyway. This is the time of year when I try to figure out how much extra I should contribute to my RRSP. Money being tight these days, I was thinking about proceeding with a contribution in kind with the New Flyer Industries Inc. (NFI) shares that I hold inside my non-registered portfolio and having them transferred over to my RRSP stock portfolio. By doing so, I would only have something like $2,000 to contribute out of pocket, and I would hopefully get a $2,000 tax return.

Last year, I contributed a whopping $15,000 to my RRSP and received a tax refund of about $4,200. Unless you hold a lot of cash, already have a solid emergency fund, and already have a good amount invested in your TFSA, I don’t think it’s really worth it to make large RRSP contributions, unless you are in an extremely privileged financial situation. Things are going quite well for me with that 500k+ net worth of mine, but I currently have less than $4,000 in savings, which means I basically have next to nothing in what you may define as an emergency fund. Earlier this year I had a bit more in savings, but I spent the money on summer vacations and other extravagances.

Over the past few weeks, many great Canadian stocks that I hold in my investment portfolio have increased their dividends, including Granite REIT (GRT.UN), Suncor Energy (SU), Fortis Inc. (FTS), Exchange Income Corp. (EIF), and CGI Inc. (GIB.A). Sometimes it just adds a few dollars to my dividend income, but it always helps. Currently, my dividend income coming from my non-registered, US, and TFSA portfolios is now equivalent to $973 per month. I am only $313 away from reaching the equivalent of $1,000 per month. And even then, it wouldn’t be an amount that clearly shows up in my pockets because I am on a DRIP for my biggest holdings. I don’t actually receive the equivalent of $973 per month in cash from my dividends. However, it’s almost as if I did. I’ve been dancing around that 1k mark for a little while. I’ll probably get there in maybe two years from now, even if I don’t invest any new money.

Most of my stocks usually announce dividend increases, but from time to time, because I hold so many stocks in my investment portfolio—one of my precious stocks announces a dividend decrease. Unfortunately, that has recently been the case with Northland Power Inc. (NPI).
