Saying a big thank you and goodbye to Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG)

My investment portfolio declined in value today by almost $2,000. As the TSX closed today’s session at 31,887.52 points, down 1.53%, my non-registered portfolio closed at $187,062.18, my TFSA portfolio at $160,979.33, my U.S. portfolio at US$5,400.79, and my RRSP stocks-only portfolio at $102,105.31. It is quite something to see how quickly things can change from one day to the next. Yesterday, I was quite happy to update my investment portfolio, as I was at $559,603.15, a gain of over $10,000 compared to March 20. This shows just how volatile the TSX is these days.

Slowly but surely, Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) is getting ready for its delisting from the TSX.

Currently, I still see my Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) investment in both my TFSA and RRSP portfolios, but from the way it appears, I can tell that it has been delisted. I have not received the $68 per share yet, but that should arrive shortly. In my TFSA, my investment in GCG is closer to $10,000 than to $5,000, and in my RRSP portfolio, it exceeds $10,000 but is below $15,000. Following the announcement of the acquisition of Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) by Desjardins, I decided to invest in it to lock in some easy capital gains, and while waiting for the acquisition to happen, I was also enjoying a few dollars from its dividend distributions. At the time, I had several thousand dollars available and did not know what to invest in, so I took the easy route and invested it all in Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG).

Now that Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) is being delisted from the TSX, I am once again faced with the same problem: what should I do with those several thousand dollars? When it comes to my TFSA portfolio, I plan to reinvest the money in the TD Cash Management ETF (TCSH). This will help me preserve the capital. I consider all the money I invest in TCSH to be part of my savings. Over the past couple of months, I have been working very hard to build up some savings. With the delisting of my Guardian Capital Group Limited (GCG) shares in my TFSA, I will have close to $20,000 in savings. That works for me because one of my main goals was to have $20,000 in savings. If I can even push it to $25,000 or $30,000, even better. My ultimate savings goal would be $50,000.
